Time for a Breather
Today I planted the screened in porch, garage, and shade gardens. I think I am done for awhile, although I must say my pitch forking skills have come to rock due to these plantings. I put deer cages around the grass garden, partially for the deer and partially so the boys don't run them over while playing basketball. So here's what we have...

The screened in porch has a Orange Hot Lava Flowering Maple (Abutilon 'Orange Hot Lava'), White Ginger Lily (Hedychium coronarium), Sweet Almond Tree Verbena (Aloysia virgata), and a Black Knight Butterfly Bush (Buddleja davidii 'Black Knight'). We will have to wait and see how the Verbena does, we are a little north of it's comfort zone but apparently if mulched well it will die to the ground in winter and come back as an 8' tall perennial. It has a strong vanilla almond scent and I am all about fragrances wafting into the screened in porch at night.

The garden behind the garage has two Variegated Mound-lily Soapwort (Yucca x gloriosa 'Variegata'), a J. C. Raulston Hardy Century Plant (Agave parryi 'J.C. Raulston'), and four Australia Canna Lilies (Canna 'Australia'). I picked up the Lillies at Costco, 8 for $10.99 not bad considering everywhere was $15 for one. Not sure where I am going to put the other four, maybe over by the bananas. I need to get that jungle gym moved, it is impeding on my garden space. Darn kids 😜

I am pretty excited about the shade garden, my favorite fern came back quite happy and I just put in a Lady Slipper. Now all I need is a Jack in the Pulpit and my Michigan woods garden will be on it's way. But for now I was lucky enough to plant a Heron's Pirouette Hardy Begonia (Begonia grandis 'Heron's Pirouette'), Bigfoot Giant Solomon's Seal (Polygonatum commutatum 'Bigfoot'), Cajun Fire Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Cajun Fire' PP 24,150), Penny's Pink Hybrid Lenten Rose (Helleborus 'Penny's Pink' PP 24,149), and a Giant Yellow Hardy Ladyslipper Orchid (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens). This is my second Begonia, I planted one when we first moved in and the deer devoured it. Hopefully the bunnies stay away from this one as they have already taken to my roses in the back. Do you like the shattered remnants of the birdbath? When I picked up the bowl to move it the thing broke into 15 or more pieces. Guess I am done with that, oh well, that will have to wait for next year's budget, plants take priority.
The seed propagation mat is apparently working. After only two day the Swiss Chard has germinated, it took about 7 without it. Let's hope it works just as well for the peppers, those did not do well at all last year.
I think I am ready for a break from planting. Tomorrow Kevin and I are going for a bike ride and launching paper airplanes off the roof of the screened in porch to see which design flies the farthest. As of today one of Mahir Cecen's is the BEST, it is totally worth the 10 minutes.
